Today’s post is my review and recommendation for the Explorer Academy: the Nebula Secret book. This adventurous book by Trudi Truet is filled with science fiction, mystery and drama. The entire series has five books and the genres are children’s literature, mystery and adventure fiction. There are so many cool future-tech devices in this book that will fascinate kids and adults alike.

Trueit feels that research is one of her favorite parts of the writing process. In brainstorming and creating tech gadgets for the Explorer Academy world she discovered that many things she thought were completely fictional actually existed!

My personal experience and feedback

Review written jointly by my 17 year old daughter and I!

Explorer Academy: the Nebula Secret is a wonderful book laced with mystery and excitement that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. The plot is filled with surprising twists and turns, and the stakes are high as you follow 12-year-old Cruz Coronado’s adventures at the elite Explorer Academy where he works to uncover the secrets surrounding his mother’s death. Cruz and his new explorer friends are equipped with groundbreaking gadgets and talented professors who guide them on their journey of growth and self-discovery.

The book is decorated with incredible illustrations that give you a real visual of what’s going on in the story, and there are various clues hidden throughout the pages. The word choice is simple enough to be easily understood, but also crafts a detailed picture. Cruz and his friends are shown to be genuine characters, with depth and complexity as well as flaws and quirks that make them uniquely loveable. The end of the book also ties in various aspects of the story to real life, mentioning how the whimsical gadgets the explorers used could soon be a reality, and provide information about breakthroughs in various scientific fields in a way that doesn’t bore you, as some science knowledge may, but makes you excited for the future.

At the very start of the book, an attempt is made on Cruz’s life as he surfs in his homeland of Hawaii before leaving to the Explorer Academy in the nation’s capital. From there, the plot only thickens as he faces intellectual challenges as well as sabotage and attempts on his life. Cruz struggles with the need to prove himself, as his mother worked closely with the academy and his aunt Marisol teaches there. Thus, he must learn how to accept himself and come to terms with the fact that he deserves to go there. Cruz also has to maintain his friendship with his best friend, Lani, who also applied to the academy but wasn’t accepted. The pair work together on the mystery and collaborate to get to the bottom of what’s really going on, along with the help of his aunt, dad, and his fellow classmates.

In conclusion

Although the book is catered towards kids, I believe that people of any age will enjoy it. It’s packed with action and adventure and challenges you to consider innovation, new ideas, and what it means to be a true explorer and make the world a better place. I definitely recommend the Explorer Academy series to anyone who enjoys a good read —  my teens blew through the whole five-book series in less than a week!

Ooo wow how cool are these books. I love the illustrations and these would make really nice gifts too x

Wow I’ve never heard of this book but I’m adding it to my goodreads list and might give it a read!

This sounds like such an engaging book series to get teens on board with reading! This is so valuable in a time where most learning takes places in front of a screen. How special you could share this book with your daughter!

Thanks for your sweet thoughts Tana. Both my teen love reading thankfully, yes 2020 and now 2021 it is so much screen time for kids due to online school

What a great visual book. I love the illustrations! I find it interesting how Cruz got accepted to the academy but Lani didn’t. I wonder if that changes somewhere in the storyline. Seems like a really good read!

Wow, thanks for sharing us your review of these books. I’ll probably get these as gifts for my nephew.

I haven’t actually read this yet but I think this is what my nephew told me about before. I need to check it out with him as I am now interested about this after reading your post.
