Fostering a dog

Fostering a dog

Some things in life are free; and these are little things that give us the most happiness too!

My kids have always asked me and their dad to get them a dog, especially after knowing that both their parents have had pets growing up. But I always gave my reasoning- we are too busy, we take vacations twice a year, it is too much of work. But 3 years back we gave in as my oldest, 13 at that time, started filling applications for fostering dogs.

We got our 1st foster dog, Ruger, in Nov 2016. She was a sweetie and was with us for a week before she was adopted. We had a positive experience and fostering felt just right. Within a week, we got Pixie. Just like Ruger, she was a mixed breed abandoned pet in shelter. She stayed with us for 2 months. We were enjoying having the fostering experience. Taking them to weekend adoption events or meet and greet was doable and gave us experience seeing other rescue dogs looking for their forever homes. Next, we got Halley and then Kendall. Kendall was part of our family for 2 years! We loved having her. Although she had a mind of her own and was not a good walker, she was very affectionate and a sweetheart at home. We were happy and sad when we found that she finally had a potential owner. She went for the mandatory sleepover and found her forever home!

Right now, we have Tigger. She is way bigger than Kendall but would still be considered a medium sized dog. She has made our life complete in so many ways. We look forward to having her as our companion, till she is ready to move on and find a loving home.

We have used the below mentioned animal shelters to volunteer and foster. If any of you are interested in making a difference in these companions’s lives who can’t speak for themselves; please check out Pup squad, Friends for Life and Special Pals.

[…] My life would not be complete without talking about our foster dog “Tigger”. We started fostering in 2016 after my kids have been pestering me for years to get them a dog. I surrendered to their plead by compromising to get foster dogs. Our first dog was Ruger, she was very sweet and with us for just a week before getting adopted. Then we had Pixie for few months, Halley for two days, Kendall for little more than two years (!) and now Tigger since October. I can’t even begin to tell how having a dog has changed our life for better; fostering gives us joy as a family knowing we are able to rescue dogs, give them temporary homes, give love to them and get tons of love in return, and meet their basic needs till they find their forever home💗 I am writing more about our fostering experiences in this blog.  […]

This was interesting as we are thinking of adopting a dog so fostering might be a way to start before adopting
